Features

NoteNew keeps its feature list short on purpose. Each part is there to help someone write clearly or read comfortably. This is the whole list, in the order you meet it.

The notebook

One address per writer.

Every writer gets a notebook at /their-handle/. It is the front page of their writing and the place readers come back to.

  • A real profile

A portrait, a short bio and, if you want one, a link to your own website. Readers know whose notes they are reading.

  • Sections you name

File notes under categories of your own. An archive of fifty notes stays as easy to browse as one of five.

  • A dated archive

Everything you publish is listed by year and month, newest first. Dates are easy to scan at a glance.

  • A feed of your own

Each notebook has an RSS feed at /their-handle/feed.xml, so readers can follow you without an account.

Writing

Long or short, it reads well.

Notes are written for reading, not for scrolling past. The page does the formatting so you can think about the words.

  • Cover images

Give a note a cover image, or leave it plain. Notes without a cover get a clean, text-first layout instead of an empty box.

  • Images in the text

Add images inside a note. They are hosted on the site, so they do not disappear when another service changes its links.

  • Contents on long notes

Long notes get a table of contents built from their headings, so readers can jump to the part they need.

  • Tags and topics

Tag a note and it joins a site-wide topic page, next to notes on the same subject from other writers.

  • Accented text, done properly

Vietnamese and other accented languages render cleanly, from headings to comments. No broken diacritics.

  • Ordinary links

Link to your sources and to your own website. Links in notes are plain links, as they should be.

Reading

Free, and no account needed.

Anyone can read every published note. There is nothing to sign up for and nothing to dismiss before the text appears.

  • Plain, fast pages

Pages are server-rendered HTML and CSS. They load quickly and keep working on slow connections.

  • Comfortable on a phone

Every layout is designed for small screens too: one readable column, generous line spacing, no sideways scrolling.

  • Follow a subject

Topic pages collect tagged notes from every notebook, so you can follow an idea instead of a person.

  • A feed for the whole site

Prefer to see everything? The site feed at /feed.xml lists new notes from all writers.

Comments

Reviewed before they appear.

Readers can reply to any note with just a name. No account and no email address are needed.

  • Held for review

Guest comments wait for a moderator. Only approved comments are shown, which keeps threads useful and free of spam.

  • Tidied automatically

Comments that are never approved are deleted after 30 days. Nothing sits in a queue forever.

Left out

On purpose.

Some things are missing because a notebook does not need them. We think readers notice the difference.

  • No ads

Nothing competes with the text for attention.

  • No analytics or tracking pixels

We do not measure readers or follow them from page to page.

  • No third-party scripts

The page runs only the site’s own small scripts. Nothing loads code from elsewhere.

  • No cookies for readers

Reading and commenting set no cookies at all. Only administrators get a session cookie, when they sign in.

Writing here

Notebooks are by invitation, so there is no public sign-up. Writers keep ownership of what they publish.
